Constraints

Prerequisites: n8n 1.19.4 or later; OpenAI API credential (openAiApi); Gmail OAuth2 credential (gmailOAuth2). Input: podcast transcript text (replace the hardcoded sample in the Podcast Episode Transcript code node). Required materials: n8n instance, network access. Cost: OpenAI API usage billed by token; Gmail sending is free within Google quotas.

What they did

The n8n team published a workflow template that demonstrates how to turn a podcast transcript into a structured digest automatically. The workflow includes: manual trigger, code node for transcript input, Summarization Chain for summary generation, Information Extractor for topics and questions, Split Out to split records, AI Agent with Wikipedia tool for per-topic enrichment, Code node to format HTML, and Gmail node to send email. The template is public on n8n.io and can be imported and modified by users.

How it went

No specific runtime results or ROI data were reported by the source. The template description states it can automatically create a summarized and enriched podcast digest and send it via email (author_report).

Worth knowing

1. The Podcast Episode Transcript node contains hardcoded sample philosophy podcast text and must be replaced with real input before use. 2. The Send Digest recipient address is [email protected] and must be updated. 3. Requires n8n 1.19.4+; credentials needed are openAiApi and gmailOAuth2. 4. The summarization chain uses Recursive Character Text Splitter (chunkSize=6000, chunkOverlap=1000); very long transcripts may need parameter tuning. 5. This site has not tested the workflow (reproduction=not_tested); after building, test the full pipeline with a short transcript first. 6. Nodes use gpt-4o-mini; gpt-4o is also listed by Scout, likely from platform metadata.

Structure checked · Not run-tested

Use “Import from File” in n8n, or copy the JSON and paste it into the editor. Connect your own accounts, then try test data. The template is inactive by default.

Setup and test checklist

Credentials to connect

  • OpenAI Chat Model node: connect OpenAI API credentials.
  • OpenAI Chat Model3 node: connect OpenAI API credentials.
  • OpenAI Chat Model1 node: connect OpenAI API credentials.
  • Send Digest node: connect Gmail OAuth2 credentials.

Configuration to replace

  • Source template is n8n public workflow #1956 (~18 nodes). Keep inactive after import; verify triggers, expressions and external API endpoints.
  • Sticky-note guidance is informational; replace placeholders with your own accounts, sheet schemas or channel IDs.

Test input and expected output

  • Manually run the main path once in a test workspace and confirm credentialed nodes authenticate without errors.
  • Drive one synthetic/redacted sample through and check output fields and downstream writes before enabling in production.

Template changes

  • Author credential bindings, webhookId and execution data are removed; the workflow is inactive. Nodes, connections and original prompts are preserved. Not run-tested in n8n.
  • No business-logic edits; verify keys, quotas and privacy compliance before use.

Steps

  1. Prepare transcript and trigger the workflow

    Open the template in n8n, locate the Podcast Episode Transcript node (type: Code), and replace the hardcoded sample transcript with your actual podcast text. Save, then click When clicking "Execute Workflow" to run it manually.

  2. Configure the summarization chain

    The Summarize Transcript node (type: Summarization Chain) is set to documentLoader mode. It is wired to Default Data Loader, Recursive Character Text Splitter (chunkSize=6000, chunkOverlap=1000), and OpenAI Chat Model (gpt-4o-mini). You can usually run it as-is; for very long transcripts, adjust chunkSize and chunkOverlap. After running, this node produces $json.response.text as the summary.

  3. Extract topics and questions

    The Extract Topics & Questions node (type: Information Extractor) receives the summary and uses gpt-4o-mini to output structured JSON with a questions array and a topics array.

    Execution prompt · Source text。Extract Topics & Questions node text parameter (information extractor input template)

    =Podcast Summary:  {{ $json.response.output_text }}

    Execution prompt · Source text。Extract Topics & Questions node options.systemPromptTemplate parameter

    =Come up with a list of questions and further topics to explore that are relevant for the context. Make sure questions are relevant to the topics but not verbatim. Think hard about what the appropriate questions should be and how it relates to the summarization.
  4. AI Agent researches each topic

    The Topics node (Split Out) splits the questions array into individual items, feeding each into the AI Agent. The AI Agent uses gpt-4o-mini and has the Wikipedia tool attached, automatically retrieving and explaining each topic.

    Execution prompt · Source text。AI Agent node text parameter (agent per-item input prompt)

    =Question: {{ $json.question }}
    Why: {{ $json.why }}

    Context:  {{ $('Summarize Transcript').first().json.response.text }}
  5. Format as HTML

    The Format topic text & title node (type: Code) combines AI Agent outputs, the summary, and the original questions list into HTML fragments. It uses JavaScript to read upstream node data and returns { topics, summary, questions }.

    Execution prompt · Source text。Format topic text & title node jsCode parameter

    const inputItems = $input.all();
    const topics = [];
    const questions = [];
    const summary = $('Summarize Transcript').first().json.response.text;
    // Format Topics
    for (const [index, topic] of inputItems.entries()) {
      const title = $('Topics').all()[index].json.question

      topics.push(`
        <h3>${title}</h3>
        <p>${topic.json.output}</p>`.trim()
      )
    }

    // Format Questions
    for (const question of $('Extract Topics & Questions').first().json.output.questions) {
      questions.push(`
        <h3>${question.question}</h3>
        <p>${question.why}</p>`.trim()
      )
    }

    return { topics, summary, questions }
  6. Send email

    The Send Digest node (type: Gmail) assembles the HTML fragments into an email body. Change sendTo from [email protected] to the real recipient, and confirm the gmailOAuth2 credential is configured. Subject is Podcast Digest.
