Constraints

Requires an n8n instance, Google Sheets OAuth2 credentials, a copy of the author's Google Sheets template with link sharing enabled. All Google Sheets nodes must be manually pointed to your copy (document URL and sheet tabs: transactions / budgets).

What they did

Author eantz built an n8n workflow with an MCP Server Trigger exposing 8 personal-finance tools (list/add/update/delete transactions; add/update/delete/get budgets). These tools are exposed to MCP-compatible AI clients via toolWorkflow nodes, with all data stored in Google Sheets.

How it went

Author reports: when adding a transaction, the workflow checks the monthly budget for that category. If no budget exists, it returns a task suggesting the user add one; if expenses exceed the budget, it returns a task prompting the AI to warn the user or suggest adjusting the budget. (author_report)

Worth knowing

Date-range filtering limitation: the Google Sheets node does not support date-range filters, so same-month ranges are filtered by the helper 'month' column, while cross-month ranges fetch all transactions then filter in a Filter node. The budget-check logic for updating transactions is duplicated because n8n cannot reference return values from nodes that were not executed. All Google Sheets nodes have empty documentId values in workflow.json and must be replaced with your actual copy link.

Steps

  1. Import the template and configure Google OAuth

Open the template in n8n, enter any Google Sheets node, click credentials 'Create New Credential', and complete OAuth2 sign-in following the [Google credentials docs](https://docs.n8n.io/integrations/builtin/credentials/google/).

  2. Copy and share the Google Sheets template

Open the author's [Google Sheets template](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XzoYEZflj1Rdo2MVKosRqXHSjkazE5vuwYWHLybX4b0/edit?usp=sharing), click File → Make a copy. In the copy, click Share → Change to anyone with the link, so n8n can access it.

  3. Point every Google Sheets node to the right document and sheet

In each Google Sheets node: set Document source to 'By URL' and paste your copy link; set Sheet to transactions for transaction-related nodes, and budgets for budget-related nodes.

  4. Safety tip: human confirmation before action

Safety tip (editorial safety note, not the template author's practice): before the AI client actually appends, updates or deletes data in Google Sheets, have a human confirm each change.

  5. Connect an MCP-compatible AI client and test the tools

Start the MCP Server Trigger (path: personal-expense), configure this MCP server in your AI client (e.g., Claude Desktop, Cursor). Test with:

Execution prompt · Source text。AI client chat input to trigger the add_budget tool

Add budget for fashion for this month until the end of the year, $500 per month

Prompt you can copy

Execution prompt · Source text。Type it in an MCP client (e.g. Claude Desktop) connected to this n8n MCP server

This block is the prompt. Ads are never placed here.

Add budget for fashion for this month until the end of the year, $500 per month

Paste your Google Sheets copy link and I'll check which nodes still need configuration.
