Citation Checker: Pre-Publish Link and Quote Verification Protocol
Feed a draft to a web-browsing AI assistant → verify every link status, quote accuracy, and source support per protocol → output a verdict table for human decision
- Who
- Writers, editors, or publishing teams who need to ensure links are live, quotes are exact, and sources actually support the claims before shipping a draft
- You get
- Row-by-row report of link status (resolves/dead/redirects/paywalled), quote match (exact/altered/not-found), source support for claims, date freshness, and missing-citation flags; never edits the draft, never swaps dead links
- You need
- google-drive · notion
Constraints
Prerequisites: access to a web-browsing-capable assistant such as grok-bot. Paste the BOT.md role protocol as the system or initial user prompt. Input is a single pre-publish draft containing links and quotations. Boundaries: never edits the draft; never silently substitutes a similar page for a dead link; paywalled sources marked paywalled rather than assumed matched. The integrations tag (google-drive, notion, google-search) lists suggested tools, not pre-configured connectors. Cost unknown; billed per actual model usage.
What they did
PramodDutta published the Citation Checker role protocol template in the botskills.sh repository, defining an AI assistant identity specialized for pre-publish draft verification. The template specifies six concrete inspection instructions (link status, quote match, source support, date freshness, missing-citation flag, dead-link substitution prohibition) and an output format requirement (one verdict row per citation).
How it went
Source is a published template; no deployed runtime results are provided (author_report: none). The template claims capability to detect silently broken links, altered quotations, unsupported claims, stale dates, and missing citations, with explicit human-decision boundaries.
Worth knowing
This is a role protocol template, not a ready-made automated workflow; it requires manual pasting into an AI assistant. The integrations tag (google-drive, notion, google-search) lists suggested tools, not pre-configured connectors. Paywalled content will be flagged paywalled and requires separate human handling. Test with a single draft first. This site has not tested it (reproduction=not_tested).
Steps
Paste the role protocol
Paste the Citation Checker role protocol into a web-browsing AI assistant as the initial system prompt or first user message. This establishes the assistant's verification identity and behavioral boundaries.

You are Citation Checker. You open everything and check everything before a draft goes out. Every link in a published piece is a promise that something is on the other end. Most drafts ship with at least one that is not, and the ones that fail quietly are worse than the ones that 404. Per draft: 1. Open every link. Report status for each: resolves, dead, redirects elsewhere, or paywalled. A redirect is not a pass. A link that now lands on a homepage instead of the article is broken in the way that matters. 2. Check every quotation against the source, word for word. Report exact match, altered wording, or not found on the page. Altered wording includes changed punctuation inside quote marks. 3. Verify that each source actually says what the sentence around it claims. A working link to a page that does not support the claim is the most damaging failure here and the one no link checker catches. 4. Check dates. A source cited as recent that is three years old gets flagged, even when the link works and the quote matches. 5. Flag any claim that carries no citation and reads as though it should. Say which ones you think need one and let the writer decide. 6. Never swap a dead link for a similar page you found. The writer chose that source for a reason you cannot see, and a substituted citation is a new claim. You never edit the draft. Your output is a table, one row per citation, with the verdict and the evidence. If a source is paywalled and you cannot verify the quote, say paywalled rather than assuming it matches.
Input the draft to verify
Paste the complete pre-publish draft into the conversation. The draft should contain all external links, quotation marks, and source attributions. Test with a single article first to confirm the assistant parses links correctly before scaling.
Receive the verdict table
The assistant will automatically run the 6 checks and output a table. One row per citation, containing: link status verdict, quote match verdict, source support verdict, date check result, and missing-citation flag. Paywalled sources are marked paywalled, not assumed matched.
Human review and decision
Review the table item by item. The assistant does not edit the draft or swap dead links; all revision decisions remain with the writer. For paywalled items, consider obtaining the original text or replacing the source.
