Automatically detect Shopify orders over $200, pull the customer's purchase history, generate an AI-powered behavior summary, and push a real-time alert to a Slack channel

Constraints

Requires: an n8n instance (self-hosted or cloud), Shopify store Admin API access token, Slack workspace with Bot credentials, and an OpenAI API key. Default threshold is $200, adjustable in the If node. The workflow.json can be imported directly into n8n.

What they did

Author Yaron Been published this workflow template on the n8n template library. The template demonstrates an automation that listens for new Shopify orders via the orders/create webhook, pulls the customer's historical purchase record for orders over $200, generates a behavior summary using an OpenAI model, and pushes an alert containing the customer name, order total, and AI summary to a designated Slack channel. Low-value orders terminate via a NoOp branch. The template provides an import-ready workflow JSON, per-node parameter configurations, and original prompt text.

How it went

The source reports the template can be used to: notify sales teams of potential VIP purchases, prep support reps with customer history, and detect repeat buyers and upsell opportunities (author_report). The template has 1,161 views on n8n.io.

Worth knowing

Threshold, Slack channel, AI prompt style, and Shopify auth token must be replaced with actual values by the user (see the How to Customize table in description.md). The Shopify URL in workflow.json uses API version 2023-07; verify endpoint currency against Shopify's current version. The 'Ignore Low-Value Order' node is actually an OpenAI Chat Model sub-node (gpt-4o-mini) for the AI Agent—not a true 'ignore' path; low-value orders are terminated by the If node's false branch via NoOp. This site has not tested the workflow; reproduction status is not_tested.

n8n workflow template

Structure checked · Not run-tested

Use “Import from File” in n8n, or copy the JSON and paste it into the editor. Connect your own accounts, then try test data. The template is inactive by default.

Setup and test checklist

Credentials to connect

  • After import, connect your own credentials on auth-required nodes; author secrets are not included.

Configuration to replace

  • Source template is n8n public workflow #4384 (~13 nodes). Keep inactive after import; verify triggers, expressions and external API endpoints.
  • Sticky-note guidance is informational; replace placeholders with your own accounts, sheet schemas or channel IDs.

Test input and expected output

  • Manually run the main path once in a test workspace and confirm credentialed nodes authenticate without errors.
  • Drive one synthetic/redacted sample through and check output fields and downstream writes before enabling in production.

Template changes

  • Author credential bindings, webhookId and execution data are removed; the workflow is inactive. Nodes, connections and original prompts are preserved. Not run-tested in n8n.
  • No business-logic edits; verify keys, quotas and privacy compliance before use.

Steps

  1. Configure Shopify trigger and type conversion

    Import workflow.json into the n8n editor. Configure the 'New Shopify Order' trigger node: set event to orders/create, authentication to accessToken, and enter your Shopify private app token. Add the 'Type conversion (String to Number)' node to cast $json.total_price to number for downstream comparison.

  2. Set amount-based conditional routing

    Add an 'If' node with condition $json.total_price > 200. Connect the 'true' branch to the customer-history retrieval path; connect the 'false' branch to 'No Operation, do nothing' to terminate the flow. Adjust the threshold as needed.

  3. Fetch and format customer order history

    On the 'true' branch, add the 'Fetch Customer Order History' HTTP Request node: set URL to https://your-store.myshopify.com/admin/api/2023-07/orders.json?customer_id={{ $('New Shopify Order').item.json.id }} and add Header X-Shopify-Access-Token. Then add the 'Type conversion (Array to String)' node to convert $json.orders into a string for the AI prompt.

    =https://your-store.myshopify.com/admin/api/2023-07/orders.json?customer_id={{ $('New Shopify Order').item.json.id }}
  4. Generate AI-powered customer summary

    Add the 'Summarize Order History' LangChain Agent node. Choose promptType 'define' and enter the prompt text referencing the orders string from the previous step. Keep options.systemMessage as 'You are a helpful assistant' or customize. Connect the model to the OpenAI Chat Model node at 'Ignore Low-Value Order' (default gpt-4o-mini, switchable to gpt-4o or gpt-4).

    Execution prompt · Source text。LangChain Agent node text field (promptType=define)

    =Summarize the customer's order history for Slack. Here is their order data:
    {{ $json.orders }}

    Execution prompt · Source text。LangChain Agent node options.systemMessage field

    You are a helpful assistant
  5. Send Slack VIP alert

    Add the 'Send Slack Alert' Slack node: set select to 'channel', channelId to your target channel ID (e.g., C08TTV0CC3E). In the text field, enter the rich message template referencing the original order's customer name, order total, and AI summary output. Disable includeLinkToWorkflow. Save and activate the workflow.

    Execution prompt · Source text。Slack node text field

    =🚨 High-Value Order Alert!
    Customer: {{ $('New Shopify Order').item.json.billing_address.first_name }} {{ $('New Shopify Order').item.json.billing_address.last_name }}
    Order Total: ${{ $('New Shopify Order').item.json.total_price }}
    Customer Order history Summary: {{ $json.output }}

Prompt you can copy

Setup guidance · Editorial suggestion。Hand to setup assistant; confirm inputs and permissions first

This block is the prompt. Ads are never placed here.

You are an n8n workflow setup assistant. The user wants to replicate the Shopify VIP order alert flow. Assist in this order: 1) Confirm the user has an n8n instance, Shopify Admin API token, Slack Bot credentials, and OpenAI API key; 2) Guide them to import workflow.json and replace credential placeholders; 3) Explain how to test (place a test order over $200 in Shopify). Do not generate or send real API requests on behalf of the user.

Replace your-store.myshopify.com, channelId, and API tokens before running
