Natural-language weather queries with n8n + MCP
Natural language input → AI Agent parsing → MCP weather tool → structured weather response
- Who
- n8n users who want to add weather lookups to automations
- You get
- Get current conditions and multi-day forecasts from natural language without a separate weather API key
- You need
- n8n
Constraints
Requires an n8n instance (cloud or self-hosted) and an OpenAI API key. The template pre-configures the MCP weather endpoint; no separate weather API key is needed.
What they did
Author jaredco published an n8n template demonstrating how to integrate an external weather service via the Model Context Protocol (MCP) into n8n's AI Agent. The workflow uses GPT-4o-mini as the language model and calls the hosted WeatherTrax MCP endpoint through an HTTP Request Tool node to accept natural-language weather queries and return structured data.
How it went
The author reports the template handles natural-language queries and outputs current weather or multi-day forecasts with an AI-generated natural-language summary (author_report). The README also provides curl examples for direct MCP endpoint calls and their response formats.
Worth knowing
Weather data is served from an author-hosted MCP endpoint, so no separate weather API key is required, but availability depends on the author's maintenance. You must bring your own OpenAI API key. The Agent system prompt is pre-configured in the template. The template claims built-in error handling and rate limiting, but this site has not verified reliability.
Steps
Import the workflow template
In n8n, click Import workflow → From file and select the provided workflow.json, or open https://n8n.io/workflows/5026/ in the n8n template gallery and copy it to your workspace.
Configure the OpenAI credential
Click the OpenAI Chat Model node. Under Credentials, select an existing OpenAI account or click Create New, paste your OpenAI API key, and save. The model is already set to gpt-4o-mini.
Run and inspect results
Click the 🧪 Enter weather request node and change the Weather Request field to your natural-language question (e.g., "What's the weather like in Miami?"). Then click Execute Workflow at the top. After execution, click the 🧪 View Results Here node to see the agent output, tool_call, and parsed weather parameters.
