n8n · Jira

Constraints

Prerequisites: Jira Cloud admin account, n8n instance with Langchain and MCP nodes, Claude Desktop or MCP-compatible AI assistant. Cost: Jira Cloud subscription + n8n self-hosted/cloud plan. Note: all tool nodes in workflow.json have empty parameters objects; field mappings must be configured manually.

What they did

Author tamerelzein built an MCP Server workflow in n8n, wiring six Jira tool nodes (create issue, add comment, get transitions, add attachment, change status, get issue) and one httpRequest tool node (get projects and issue types) to an mcpTrigger node, enabling MCP-compatible AI assistants to call Jira APIs via natural language.

How it went

The author reports the workflow lets Claude create issues, add comments, get transitions, add attachments, change statuses, get issue details, and list projects/issue types (author_report).

Worth knowing

All tool nodes in workflow.json have empty parameters objects; actual field mappings must be configured by the user. The mcpTrigger webhook path defaults to 'test_mcp' and must match the URL entered in Claude Desktop. The source does not provide specific Jira field-mapping examples. Claude Desktop MCP connection relies on local network access to the n8n instance. Not tested by this site.

Steps

  1. Configure Jira Cloud credentials

Add Jira Cloud API credentials in n8n Credentials, ensuring the account has sufficient permissions to create issues, add comments, and transition statuses.

  2. Import template and configure MCP Trigger

Import this template from n8n.io (ID 3939). In the MCP Server Trigger node, set the webhook path (default 'test_mcp'). Verify all Jira tool nodes and the httpRequest node are connected to the MCP Server node, then activate the workflow.

  3. Connect Claude Desktop to the local MCP server

Open Claude Desktop App, go to Settings > Developer Settings, enable "Connect to local MCP servers". Add a new connection with your n8n MCP server URL (e.g., http://localhost:5678/webhook/test_mcp). Start a new conversation and ask Claude to perform Jira tasks.

  4. Safety tip: human confirmation before action

Safety tip (editorial safety note, not the template author's practice): before the AI actually creates Jira issues, adds comments or transitions status, have a human confirm each change.

  5. Operate Jira with natural language

Send natural-language commands to Claude in conversation. Four example prompts from the source are provided below:

Execution prompt · Source text。Claude Desktop conversation input

Claude, please create a new Jira ticket in the Web Development project with bug issue type. The summary should be 'Homepage loading slowly' and the description should be 'Users are experiencing delays of 5+ seconds when loading the homepage on mobile devices.'

Execution prompt · Source text。Claude Desktop conversation input

Claude, please add a comment to Jira ticket WEB-123 saying 'This issue has been reproduced on multiple devices and browsers. Priority should be increased.'

Execution prompt · Source text。Claude Desktop conversation input

Claude, can you get the details of ticket WEB-123 and tell me its current status?

Execution prompt · Source text。Claude Desktop conversation input

Claude, please move ticket WEB-123 to 'In Progress' status.

Prompt you can copy
