Build an Options Research Bot in Grok Bot (6 Steps)
Input: watchlist and read-only instructions → Processing: Grok Bot fetches news, earnings calendar, and overnight moves daily → Output: a one-page pre-market brief
- Who
- Options traders who want to automate pre-market research without letting the bot place orders or recommend trades
- You get
- Receive a one-page weekday brief with source links covering earnings dates, overnight moves, and sentiment before the open
- You need
- Grok Bot
Constraints
Requires Grok Bot access; a watchlist (start with a small set of tickers); optional brokerage/market-data connector (must disable order-placement permissions if used). No fees are mentioned, but platform feature updates may affect availability.
What they did
Author Alvin (hallway247) created a read-only research assistant named Options Research inside Grok Bot. He first drafted a five-line job file that restricts the bot to research support, prohibits trading or recommendations, and limits output to a personal brief. He pasted the instructions into the bot, added a watchlist, configured X search and the web as read-only sources, and cautiously handled optional brokerage connector permissions. He enabled Auto-review and approval cards for non-read actions, converted manual runs into a weekday 7:30 AM ET routine, and defined a one-page brief format.
How it went
The author reports the bot produces a one-page brief each weekday before the open, covering earnings dates, overnight moves, and sentiment, without placing orders or suggesting trades (author_report). No specific return or error-rate data is provided.
Worth knowing
This case uses only the free six-step process the author published; a paid guide "Grok Bot, Hired Right" is linked at the end and was not used. Content is for education only, not financial advice. Grok Bot Pages and approval features were added in October 2026 and may change with platform updates. The original post does not detail specific brokerage connector setup steps or fee conditions.
Steps
Write the job file (five lines)
Before creating the bot, write five lines: business and audience, the one job, rules, schedule, and output scope. Example: "I trade options in my own account. This bot supports my research, not my decisions." / "Each weekday morning, check my watchlist for overnight news, upcoming earnings dates and unusual moves, then write a one-page brief." / "Read only. Never place, change or cancel an order. Never suggest a trade. Link the source for every fact." / "Weekdays at 7:30 AM ET, before the open." / "The brief comes to me. Nothing goes out to anyone else." One job per bot.
Create the bot and paste the job file
Create a new bot in Grok Bot, name it something plain like "Options Research," and paste the five lines into its instructions. Add your watchlist as a short list of tickers. Start small; grow it once the brief is useful.
Give it read-only sources
Start with sources that need no account connection: X search (Grok Bot can read public X posts and profiles without connecting an X account, per Oct 11, 2026 changelog), and the web (investor-relations pages, earnings calendars, news). If you connect a brokerage or market-data connector, switch off any tool that can place, change, or cancel orders one by one on the plugin page. Leave on the setting that makes the bot ask before sharing returned data elsewhere (Oct 11, 2026 changelog). Give the bot only what the job needs.
Keep approvals strict
Use Auto-review and approval cards to stay in control: add a rule that pauses anything that isn't a read so you see a card first. If you deny an approval card, the bot stops and doesn't retry that action until you send another message (Oct 23, 2026 changelog).
Turn it into a routine
Once a manual run produces a brief you like, ask the bot to make it a weekday 7:30 AM ET routine. Keep the trigger narrow. The brief can stay in chat, or the bot can keep a Page current (Pages added Oct 22, 2026). A watchlist Page updated each morning works well.
Decide what the brief looks like
Tell the bot exactly what you want back. For example: earnings this week for watchlist tickers with date and source link; overnight moves with a sourced reason or "no clear reason found"; what people are asking about each ticker on X with links to 2–3 posts; things to check yourself, such as implied volatility ahead of earnings, written as questions, not suggestions. Keep it to one screen.
