Wake a Grok Bot Routine via Webhook to auto-analyze CI failures
Input: CI build failure job and summary; Processing: POST to Grok Bot Webhook Routine; Output: structured conclusion in Phenomenon / Possible Cause / Suggested Check format
- Who
- Developers, SREs, or teams who want automated analysis when CI builds fail
- You get
- Automatically trigger the Bot on CI failure and receive a three-part analysis (Phenomenon / Possible Cause / Suggested Check) without monitoring the pipeline
- You need
- Grok Bot
Constraints
Prerequisites: a working Grok Bot account; an environment capable of sending HTTP POST (curl, Java, CI scripts). Cost and permissions: no extra fees mentioned; Webhook secret must be kept secure. Boundaries: HTTP 200 only means the task was accepted and started, not completed; rate limit is unpublished; deduplication must be arranged in the instruction itself.
What they did
The author followed a four-step flow to create a "CI failure analysis" Webhook Routine in Grok Bot: chose Webhook trigger, pasted the analysis instruction, obtained the URL and secret, verified with curl, then integrated it into a Java service using async calls.
How it went
The author reported: curl returned 200, and the conversation showed the Routine waking up and returning a conclusion in the Phenomenon / Possible Cause / Suggested Check format; the Java side used async sending to avoid impacting the main flow. (Source: author_report; not tested by this site.)
Worth knowing
HTTP 200 only means the request was accepted and execution started, not that analysis is complete. If you need the result delivered to a specific place, you must state that explicitly in the Routine instruction. CI re-runs will trigger duplicates; the author suggested including a unique id in the request body and asking the Bot to record processed ids, but this deduplication mechanism is unverified. Rate limits are unpublished; call only on events that need judgment (e.g., build failures), not on every successful build. Store the secret in environment variables or CI secrets, never in source code or chat. To deliver results to email or GitHub PR comments, you must first configure the corresponding connectors; the source did not detail those steps.
Steps
Create a Webhook Routine
In a Grok Bot conversation, ask to create a Routine with Webhook trigger. Paste the instruction below as the Routine content, describing the desired outcome without prescribing specific operation steps. After creation, the Routine list will show a new entry that is enabled and labeled with the Webhook trigger condition.
Execution prompt · Source text。Grok Bot Routine instruction field
Retrieve the Webhook URL and secret
In the Routine list, open the menu for the newly created Routine and select "Webhook". The panel displays: the POST target URL (copyable), an authentication secret (viewable/copyable), and the required request header format. Store the secret in an environment variable or CI secret; do not commit it to source code or send it in chat.
Test connectivity with curl
Run the following curl command in a terminal, replacing the placeholder URL and secret with actual values. Adjust the request body fields to match your scenario, ensuring the payload includes the job and summary fields expected by the Routine instruction. Expect HTTP 200; shortly after, the same conversation should show the Routine waking up and returning the analysis.
Execution prompt · Source text。Terminal command line
curl -X POST "你的 Webhook 地址" \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -H "Authorization: Bearer 你的密钥" \ -d '{"id":"build-1024","job":"order-service","status":"failed","summary":"单测 OrderServiceTest 超时"}'Integrate into a Java service or CI pipeline
Use the JDK built-in HttpClient to send notifications asynchronously from a Java service, avoiding blocking the main flow. Read the URL and secret from environment variables. On failure, log only. Strip sensitive information (secrets, phone numbers) before sending, transmitting only a summary.
