Prevent Grok Bot Log Overwrites: One Bot One File, Append-Only, One Machine One Directory
Multiple Bots writing to the same markdown log → split by Bot filename, switch to append-only, isolate directories per machine
- Who
- Users running multiple Grok Bots across machines to keep conversation logs
- You get
- Eliminate race-condition overwrites when concurrent Bots write the same file, preserving complete log history
- You need
- Grok Bot
Constraints
Prerequisites: Already using Grok Bot or similar Agents to write conversation logs to local markdown files, with multi-Bot or multi-machine concurrency. No additional software required; changes are to file naming and write strategy. Cost: none. Permissions: filesystem write access and git access (for historical recovery).
What they did
On 2026-10-22, author @ai_simonhu had three Grok Bots on Mac "小胡" backfill logs for 2026-10-21. All three Bots shared the path raw/grok-bot-小胡/2026-10-21.md. Despite a rule requesting "append", the model performed full overwrites. Within 40 seconds the later writes covered earlier ones. The author then used Claude to inspect git history, recovered content from three versions, and split them into separate files.
How it went
On 2026-10-31 the author verified locally: the three split files (2026-10-21-x管家.md, 2026-10-21-30u30.md, 2026-10-21-个人知识库系统搭建.md) and the recovery commit notes remain; rules were written into the grok-bot integration guide and raw protocol. The author did not deliberately re-run the three-Bot race to reproduce the contention. (author_report)
Worth knowing
Model file-writing behavior tends toward full overwrite; requesting "append" in prompts or rules is not reliably effective. Path isolation is more reliable than prompt constraints. The grok-bot integration guide and raw protocol text were not provided in the source. This site has not tested the concurrent scenario.
Steps
Diagnose the issue: shared path + model full-write behavior
Check whether multiple Bots currently write to the same file path. In the author's case, three Grok Bots (x管家, 30u30, 个人知识库系统搭建) shared raw/grok-bot-小胡/2026-10-21.md. Although the rule said "append", the model performed full overwrites. Within 40 seconds the later write covered the earlier one. If data loss already occurred, attempt recovery via git history.
Split files: one Bot per file
Assign an independent file to each Bot instance, using the naming format YYYY-MM-DD-<bot-name>.md. Examples: 2026-10-21-x管家.md, 2026-10-21-30u30.md. No Bot may write to another Bot's file path.
Enforce write strategy: append-only + one machine one directory
Two rules must be enforced together: 1) If the file already exists, append only to the end; never overwrite the entire file. On rebase conflict, abort, pull again, then append. 2) Each machine writes only to its own directory: raw/<agent>-<machine-name>/; consolidated logs or global state are maintained by a single designated machine only, preventing simultaneous cross-machine writes to the same target.
