Iterating a Zen Garden iOS App with Claude Opus 5.5
From idea validation to App Store: conversational iteration, model autonomously chose Metal shaders for math-based pixel generation
- Who
- Designers/developers who want to build an app with AI
- You get
- Shipped Zen Garden App to App Store in 2 weeks using 25 billion tokens
- You need
- Claude
Constraints
Build the app iteratively with Claude (Opus 5.5): describe what you want in natural language and let the model write the code. The source does not say which Claude interface or plan was used, or how the 25 billion tokens were billed. Reader note (not from the source): shipping an iOS app generally needs Xcode and an Apple Developer account.
What they did
Inspired by @Nalden's share of @gwern's essay on samon (zen garden sand patterns), the author used Claude Opus 5.5 to develop Zen Garden App. A simple prompt produced a flat prototype in minutes; asking to 'make the scenery more realistic' led the model to autonomously use Metal shaders—calculating every pixel from scratch via math, every frame—rather than expected 3D models/textures. Each subsequent feature request (e.g., 'add a bird') was implemented beyond expectations (kingfisher landing on bridge, watching koi, diving to catch fish).
How it went
Author reports: 2 weeks, 25 billion tokens, from inspiration to App Store shipping. The model repeatedly took 'the unexpected harder route to get to a better result,' changing how the author builds. Calls Opus 5.5 'the best model out there by a long stretch' for designers, while maintaining that AI cannot 'care' and designers must bring taste. (author_report)
Steps
Get inspired and validate the concept
Give Claude (Opus 5.5) a simple prompt for a quick prototype to judge whether the idea is worth pursuing. The author, inspired by samon (the patterns raked into zen-garden sand), had a working but flat prototype within minutes.
Ask for realism, discover the core technique
Then ask it to "make the scenery more realistic." The model may propose an unexpected approach on its own—in this case no 3D models or textures, but Metal shaders calculating every pixel of moss, rocks, water and cherry blossoms from maths, every frame.
Iterate features and observe model autonomy
Keep asking for features in natural language (e.g., "add a bird") and watch how the model fills in details. Here it added birds that actually visit Japanese gardens, life-size, each with its own call, and calculated where they land and how they move.
Polish details continuously until shipping
Keep asking the model to go even harder on the tiniest details until it is ready to ship. After two weeks and 25 billion tokens, the author shipped Zen Garden to the App Store (link in the author's self-reply).
